Becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant is not for the faint of heart; neither is starting a business. Doing so requires a lot of effort; however, depending on your state and regulations, it is entirely possible. The healthcare industry pays well and provides plenty of benefits, and a CNA with lots of experience and education can earn good money. Of course, you will want to decide on the type of patients you will serve since most CNAs are required to work under the supervision of or get approval from an RN or an LPN connected to an RN.
What Are Some of the Items Needed to Start A CNA Business?
Accreditation and a License
To start, you will need to take an accredited course and be licensed in the healthcare category that you plan to provide services. You will need them both for operating your business and for insurance and direct billing purposes.
A business plan and SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals
Creating a business plan is just as important as deciding to become a CNA, your program choice, and where you will work afterward. Starting and managing a business takes strategic thinking, research, planning, and support. Taking the time to explore and evaluate your business and personal goals and creating a well-thought-out plan shows that you are serious about the success of your venture.
Additionally, it allows for SMART goals that act as milestones to gauge your achievements. A business plan also helps you think about potential setbacks that you might not otherwise have considered without doing the research needed.
Registration with your state
All businesses are required to choose a legal structure. You will need to research the requirements for your state when choosing from the following four types of registrations.
Sole proprietor
Partnership
Limited Liability Company or a
Corporation
Business License
Even if you operate out of your home or online, you will still need to have one. Running a business without one has serious legal consequences.
Tax Registrations
All businesses need tax registrations such as an EIN, State, and Federal EIN for employers. Should you decide on buying or selling wholesale items, you will need a Seller's Permit.
Clients
If you are looking to provide basic services such as companionship, light housekeeping, running simple errands, meal prep, or any other tasks that require no approval from a licensed nurse, the next step would be to find clients or organizations that are open to contractors. Your elderly neighbors and family members are a great place to start.
As a business owner, you will be free to work wherever and whenever you'd like as long as you follow the rules and regulations set by your state. You can also grow your business through referrals as you establish relationships with your clients and their family members.
Depending on the type of business you open, you may need to hire other professionals as business employees, such as an RN or an MD. However, keep in mind that you are the business owner, and they are your employees or contractors. Never get discouraged by the title “CNA”; you are much more.
A Few Other Things to Consider
1. Be open to professional coaching. You can find one that charges a fee or use SCORE. They provide professional advice.
2. Do market research to see what's needed in your area.
3. Talk to the Small Business Administration. FAMU SBA has a great program.
4. Consider the types of businesses you can open. Some examples are a Homehealth Agency, Staffing Agency, CPR training, Professional and Business Coaching for CNAs, a Scrub Store, and a Healthcare Training School. That's just the beginning!
Now that we've provided the answer to the question, “can I start a CNA business?” let's make sure you have completed the first and most crucial step; becoming a CNA. We believe that Nurse Resource Training Center could be a good fit if you're looking for a great CNA program.
